This blended learning course is run by the Researcher Academy 

The Researcher Academy courses are very popular and the majority are run in both semesters to give you the opportunity to attend at a time of the year that suits you. 

EMBRACING INNOVATIVE, GROWTH AND ENTERPRISING MIND-SETS.
LEARNING BLOCK 1 of the Researcher Academy’s Training Programme on Developing Innovative, Enterprising, Knowledge Exchange (KE) Focussed Mind-sets:

Target Audience: PGRs/ECRs/Technicians/Research staff 

Description: 

A 3 day intensive in-person (day 1) and online (day 2 & 3) workshop  introducing the Innovation and Knowledge Exchange programme as a whole and focussing on exploring, unpacking, unlocking, embracing and cultivating the first three of five co-related cultures and mind-sets: Growth, Innovative and Enterprising

Embarking on a research journey means developing and adopting an innovative, enterprising, open, expansive & experimental mind-set. Whilst world-class research and dynamic innovation form part of an interconnected system which depends on talented people and teams working across multiple sectors and disciplinary cultures.

This workshop will explore innovation within research-active contexts. Delegates will have the opportunity to:

  • talk, work and collaborate with other doctoral or postdoctoral researchers from diverse disciplines & multicultural backgrounds
  • learn from an experienced practitioner, drawing together ideas from numerous leading institutes and researchers.

Day One

  • an in person seminar with critical insight from an Assistant Professor and Module Leader focussed on Innovation, with direct personal researcher experience of interdisciplinary innovation and collaboration having worked within diverse, multicultural research teams in both external organisations and academia.
  • an in person workshop exploring, understanding and reflecting on individual differences, preferences and strengths through an innovation based lens, led by a Senior Careers Adviser.

Days Two & Three

  • 2 days remote virtual group working on a pre-set group task supplemented by personal individual reflection responding to tutor initiated prompts and with online drop in mentor appointments.
  • final half day online session involving all student groups presenting back on group task set

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the importance of complimentary innovative, growth and enterprising mind-sets within research active and academic environments, thus enhancing and leveraging research impact and own job prospects for a diverse range of careers within and outside of Academia.
  • Expand knowledge and raise awareness of academic entrepreneurial endeavour as a means of capitalising on and exploiting research produced ideas and intellectual assets, research driven innovation and enterprising research;
  • Understand the role and relative importance academic entrepreneurial endeavour within the University sector.
  • Gain insight into management, performance benefits and challenges surrounding university driven enterprise and innovation
  • Practice remote interdisciplinary team working and collaboration in preparation for work within geographically dispersed innovation led research teams.
  • Identify and explore own assumptions, preferences, personal values, perspectives, habits, reasoning,  false logic, ways of thinking and behavioural attributes that may underpin or undermine your own innovative, enterprising, creative thinking and growth mind-set.
  • Test out own ability (personal effectiveness, agency, approaches to leadership & self-efficacy) to influence others and get ideas across whilst simultaneously recognising and embracing individual contributions and interdisciplinary perspectives within innovation led and multidisciplinary team contexts.
  • Practice effective communication – networking, team working, presenting, pitching ideas perspective and persuasive arguments.
  • Improve your own performance within innovative, creative, enterprising research active environments via self-reflection, critical self- awareness, practice and experience….

  • specialist knowledge and skill sets helping you work towards becoming an enterprising innovative practitioner.


Important information: places are limited and offered to researchers on condition they commit to a series and sequence of 3 connected online and in person workshops. Those who do so will be awarded a certificate in Embracing an Innovative & KE Focussed Mind-set.

Delegates must sign up to all THREE interconnected learning blocks and associated workshops in either semester one OR semester two


Process:


Day One

  • 5 days remote virtual group working via TEAMS on a pre-set group task supplemented by personal individual reflection responding to tutor initiated prompts and with online drop in mentor appointments.
  • final half day online session via TEAMS involving all student groups presenting back on group task set

Please note, attendances for courses will be recorded. There are no training points associated with courses run by the Researcher Academy.

Pre-Requisites A short questionnaire will be sent for you to fill out. This must be completed and resulting generated profile read before attending introductory workshop.
