Who should attend?

These courses are NOT open to postgraduate students - they are designed for University staff only. This course carries no training points.

Registration Process

Staff are able to register for a first aid training course at any time. Course registers are regularly reviewed to ensure that delegates meet the eligibility criteria and that line manager approval has been given. As part of the registration process, delegates and line managers are required to complete the following online forms, which will also enable us to track where all qualified first aiders are located:

Important: You will need to bring your National Insurance Number along to the session. This needs to be provided to the trainer to allow registration and issue of your certificate.


Please note:
There is a cost of £45 to attend this course payable by the School/Department. If you don't attend without giving at least 3 days' notice, and the place is not taken by another delegate, then the School/Department will still be charged.

Please bring your own lunch or be prepared to buy lunch on campus.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of training, successful candidates should be able to:

  • Understand the role of the first aider, including reference to:
  • The importance of preventing cross-infection;
  • The need for recording incidents and actions;
  • Use of available equipment
  • Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizure)
  • Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock
  • Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruisers, minor burns and scalds, small splinters)

This course is suitable for low risk Schools and Departments where office/classroom teaching type activities take place.

If you work in a high risk environment or feel that you may need to cover a wider range of situations then it is strongly recommended that you attend the First Aid at Work (HSE approved course).

Assessment and Certification

Attendance on this course will qualify you ONLY to practice BASIC first aid. You will receive an approved certificate of attendance which is valid for three years. In order to retain your certification you are required to repeat this one day course within 28 days of the previous certificate.
