Who should attend?

These courses are NOT open to postgraduate students. They are designed for University staff only.

Registration Process

Staff are able to register for a first aid training course at any time. Course registers are regularly reviewed to ensure that delegates meet the eligibility criteria and that line manager approval has been given. As part of the registration process, delegates and line managers are required to complete the following online forms, which will also enable us to track where all qualified first aiders are located:

Important: You will need to bring your National Insurance Number along to the session.  This needs to be provided to the trainer to allow registration and issue of your certificate.


Please note: There is a cost of £107.00 to attend this course payable by the School/Department and you must attend all three days to gain certification. If you don't attend without giving at least 3 days' notice, and the place is not taken by another delegate, then the School/Department will still be charged.

Please bring your own lunch or be prepared to buy lunch on campus.

Learning Outcomes

The course will give you the knowledge and confidence to deal with a first aid emergency in the workplace.

Course Content:

Day One

  • Brief explanation of what first aid is about
  • Understanding the role of a first aider, including:
  • Personal hygiene and protection
  • The need for keeping records
  • The use of available equipment
  • Assess the situation in order to act on safety promptly and effectively in an emergency
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizure)
  • Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock
  • Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries including:
  • Small cuts and grazes
  • Minor burns and scolds
  • Small splinters
Day Two

  • Administer first aid to a casualty with:
  • Chest injuries
  • Burns and scalds
  • Anaphylactic shock
  • Sudden poisoning
  • Injuries to bones, muscles and joints including suspected spinal injury
  • Recognise the presence of major illness and provide appropriate first aid for:
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Epilepsy
  • Asthma
  • Diabetes

Day Three (AM)

  • Practice the skills gained including:
  • Using a wound dressing
  • Using a triangular bandage
  • Position treatment for shock
  • Recovery position
  • CPR

Day Three (PM)

  • Take a skills assessment based on dealing with:
  • Bleeding
  • Shock
  • Unconscious casualty
  • Show that you can perform CPR on a manikin and answer a number of questions

Assessment and Certification:

After completing a final assessment successful candidates receive a Health & Safety Executive (HSE) approved certificate valid for three years.

This course is legally compliant with the current Health & Safety (first aid) Regulations 1981. Upon successful completion of this three day course, first aiders receive certification to allow them to practice for three years after which a re-qualification course becomes necessary. You are recommended to attend the First Aid at Work Refresher (HSE approved) course. The refresher must be carried out within 28 days of expiry of the previous certificate otherwise the full First Aid at Work (HSE approved course) must be undertaken as appropriate to be re-established as a first aider. It is strongly recommended that you update your skills by taking an annual refresher.


Course Leader input, demonstrations and hands-on practical sessions with a skills assessment on the third day.
