Overview
Open access (OA) is a disruptive change in the ways in which research is communicated.  OA aims to maximize the social, economic and cultural impact of research by providing free access to new findings.  OA publications reach a broader audience, increasing the impact of research and boosting numbers of citations.

Since 1 April 2016, OA for journal articles and conference papers has been a requirement for REF eligibility.  OA is also mandated by leading research funders, such as the UKRI funding councils, Wellcome Trust and British Heart Foundation.

It is crucial for researchers to build their understanding of OA mechanisms and benefits to realise the full impact of their discoveries.  This course will introduce the concept and consider options available to make outputs OA, such as repositories and transformative agreements. We will review the implications of licensing and copyright, and how to access publications that are already available OA.
