Who should attend

Aspiring Teachers; New to Teaching.

This workshop is not suitable for those enrolled on the Associate Teachers' Programme (ATP) or the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education course (PGCHE).

Course Description

This half day workshop introduces you to some key ideas about teaching in higher education and it acts as an introduction to the Preparing to Teach in Higher Education Certificate.  You will explore the current HE context and teaching landscape in addition to principles of inclusive teaching and learning.


The Preparing to Teach in Higher Education Certificate

This workshop, in addition to attendance at another three half-day learning and teaching workshops, enables you to achieve a University of Nottingham Certificate.  There is no assessment, and the certificate does not carry academic credit - however these workshops can count towards accredited courses such as the Associate Teaching Programme.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop you will be able to:

  • Consider current learning and teaching in Higher Education landscape
  • Explore key contemporary learning and teaching concepts
  • Examine inclusive teaching and learning and the role it plays in teaching
  • Explore learning technology options at Nottingham to promote students' learning.

Postgraduate researchers and academic staff who are teaching less than 30 hours in an academic year as well as those who aspire to teach in Higher Education.

Pre - Workshop Task:

1.           Click on the following link: http://moodle.nottingham.ac.uk/mod/scorm/player.php?a=128&scoid=954&currentorg=ORG-AB449AF548DEF0BCDB047D7635913772&mode=&attempt=1 – you will be prompted to log into Moodle and then enrol in the Developing your teaching online module. Please select from the drop down menu ‘everyone else’ and then ‘general’.

2.           Go to Chapter 1 Developing your Teaching Identity and complete the first two tasks in the Exploring your thinking about teaching section. These are: Your thinking about teaching and Challenging your assumptions. Read the material, complete the online tasks as part of this pre-work. We will discuss this task in the session.

The Preparing to Teach in Higher Education workshop can lead to a certificate if you complete this workshop and 3 other Learning and Teaching workshops (see above recommended workshops).  Professional Development will issue you with a certificate once you have been able to verify which workshops you have attended  Email pd@nottingham.ac.uk with your name and email address as well as the titles of the 4 workshops (including Preparing to Teach in Higher Education) you have completed and the date you attended them).
