Duration 0.25 days

Who should attend

This course is suitable for staff and postgraduate research students.

Course Description

It is very difficult to predict the future.  However, there are a number of techniques that can be used to help us make assessments of - and therefore prepare ourselves for - what the future may look like.

Horizon scanning is about systematically investigating evidence about future trends.  This evidence can come from multiple sources.  Governments use the technique to ensure that they are adequately prepared for potential opportunities and threats.

Scenario planning is a technique to put together a picture, or a number of pictures, of what the future may look like.  It is a tool for focusing thought, developing shared vision and determining action.

Outcomes

This short workshop will introduce you to the techniques of horizon scanning and scenario planning, examine the theory and practices associated with them and help you to develop your own ideas as to how they may be useful in your own situation.
