Aims and Objectives


To help you prepare for writing your Humanities dissertation by considering:

  • The implications of approaching a long piece of writing
  • Possible approaches to dissertation writing, and how to focus your topic using general techniques. (NB: This class cannot deal with subject specific content or structure)
  • Aspects of planning
  • Possible approaches to structuring the literature review and other sections
  • Aspects of language (such as tense) in some of the sections
  • Connecting the parts and maintaining a logical thread of argument throughout


Process

Tutor input, individual, pairwork and group activities, an opportunity to discuss difficulties you may be having with the dissertation writing process, and how you could apply some of the ideas presented in class to your own subject area and topic. Note that there is only a limited amount of actual writing in this module.

Who should attend

International students on taught Masters Courses in Arts or Social Sciences who would like a brief introduction to, and overview of the process, language and structure of dissertation writing.
