Thinking Ahead - Career options and planning for PhDs
Duration 0.5 days
Team Researcher Academy

This course is delivered jointly by the Researcher Academy and the Careers and Employability Service

Researcher Academy courses are very popular and the majority are run in both semesters to give you the opportunity to attend at a time of the year that suits you. Semester 1 courses will be available for booking from the second week of October and Semester 2 courses from the second week of February.

Target audience

Early stage postgraduate research students [first and second year PhD students]

Don’t leave considering and researching your career options until the later stages of your PhD. Start early and use this course to find out more about the career pathways that can be open to you. Give yourself time to consider a range of options within and outside academia rather than making a rushed decision when you are writing up and preparing for your Viva. Even if you believe you have a clear career goal it is useful to have a Plan B or even Plan C.

This workshop will also consider ways in which you can make the most of your PhD in order to help you to make informed career decisions and to work towards achieving your career goals. It will also provide practical approaches to help you to maintain career planning and management activities throughout your PhD.

This workshop is designed to provide an introduction to career options and planning and it is open to PhDs from all disciplines. It includes information on academic and non-academic career routes.

Latecomer policy

Importance of booking commitment
When booking on to a Researcher Academy short course you are entering into a commitment to attend. If you find that you are no longer available to attend you MUST cancel your place (on the system if more than three days before the course) or if at short notice by emailing pg-training@nottingham.ac.uk. This will ensure that your place can be offered to another researcher on the waiting list. Failure to cancel a place results in other researchers missing out on places through the waiting list process.

It is unacceptable for researchers to just not attend when booked onto a course. Researcher Academy maintains records of those who repeatedly do not attend courses they have booked. This may affect future eligibility to book onto further Researcher Academy courses and will affect considerations for Researcher Academy funded opportunities.

Pre-Requisites    Please bring your own lunch with you to the course and a drink.
