Mental Health First Aider training (2 day - Adult)
Duration 2 days
Team Professional Development

The Adult Mental Health First Aid programme leads to accreditation by Mental Health First Aid England as a Mental Health First Aider.  This is a nationally recognised qualification and a specific role which is valued by the University.  On completion of the programme your name will be added to a SharePoint list of MH First Aiders.

Please note that this is open for colleagues to view and that you may be approached in this capacity to provide initial support to a colleague or student in difficulty.  Your trainer will outline the University’s MH First Aider strategy, including support for MH First Aiders, within training delivery and is available to answer any questions you may have.

Please note that this programme is delivered in a variety of modes including 2 full days, 4 half days and online.

Mental Health First Aiders have:

  • An in depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing
  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
  • Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
  • Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support - whether that’s self-help resources, through the University, the NHS, or a mix.

Course content and what to expect:

You can find full details of the content for each session on MHFA England's website.

  • Numbers are limited to 16 people per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported while they learn.
  • You will receive resources to keep and refer to whenever you need it. When you complete the training you'll get a certificate to say you are a Mental Health First Aider, which will need to be renewed with a half day refresher after 3 years.
  • Your trainer will be accredited by MH First Aid England to deliver this programme on their behalf and in line with national standards
  • Dates and booking links for UoN courses are found below (our courses are internal and therefore not listed on MHFA England's website)

Course cost: MHFA England charge £300 per person to qualify as a Mental Health First Aider – The Organisation and People Development team (within HR) cover this cost.

However, if you book a place and do not attend, or cancel your place within a week of delivery the charge for resources (currently £30) will be passed to your Department or Division.
