Mastering the Middle Stage (Faculty of Arts)
Duration 2 hours 30 minutes
Team Researcher Academy

This in person course is run by the Researcher Academy as part of the Arts Researcher Skills Programme

Target Audience: This session is part of the Arts Researcher Skills Programme for mid-stage researchers in the Faculty of Arts only. Please note that doctoral researchers in Arts must attend either this workshop OR Knowledge Exchange & Impact during their research degree (you can attend both if you wish).

Course Description:

The 'second year blues' is a well-known phenomenon in the doctoral world and is experienced by most (if not all) students at some point. Becoming a master of the middle stage (of your research degree) will arm you with a toolkit to solve many of the issues you might encounter and help you to progress to the final stage

During this 2.5 hour workshop we will explore:

  • Recognising your achievements
  • The various issues that can cause 'second year blues' and how you can overcome them
  • Writing strategies and dealing with writer’s block
  • Progress tracking - drafting/reviewing plans and day-to-day activity
Feedback from previous attendees:
"I'll be honest - I nearly cancelled my place on this course because I'm so busy with my research but I'm glad I didn't - good use of my time, content/activities were useful and above all, it was cathartic to chat to other 2nd years and discover that I wasn't on my own with my worries."

“Thankyou – this was just what I needed.”

Booking Guidelines

Latecomer policy
Researchers should plan to arrive prior to the advertised course start time. Except for exceptional reasons, there will be no admittance to a Researcher Academy or Faculty Training Programme (FTP) course 15 minutes after the advertised course start time.

Importance of booking commitment
When booking on to a Researcher Academy short course you are entering into a commitment to attend. If you find that you are no longer available to attend you MUST cancel your place (on the system if more than three days before the course) or if at short notice by emailing pg-training@nottingham.ac.uk. This will ensure that your place can be offered to another researcher on the waiting list. Failure to cancel a place results in other researchers missing out on places through the waiting list process.

It is unacceptable for researchers to just not attend when booked onto a course. The Researcher Academy maintains records of those who repeatedly do not attend courses they have booked. This may affect future eligibility to book onto further Researcher Academy courses and will affect considerations for Researcher Academy funded opportunities.
