Workshop description:

Working with biological agents, and substances that may contain them, is one of the most highly regulated areas of health and safety in the UK. The legislation requires that there be a suitable and sufficient risk assessment, but what does this mean in practice?

This workshop will explore biological agents risk assessments (BARAs) to help those responsible for them carry out the process effectively to ensure they are protecting themselves, those around them, and the University from potential harm of all kinds.

Aim:

This workshop aims to develop the knowledge and skills of researchers at the University of Nottingham to help them undertake effective biological agents risk assessments.

Objectives:

Through a combination of presentations, discussions, and group exercises, by the end of the workshop participants will:
  • Understand the difference between hazard and risk
  • Have a thorough knowledge of the basis for hazard categorization of biological agents
  • Appreciate what a biological agent’s risk assessment is really for
  • Know what a suitable biological agent’s risk assessment should contain
  • Be able to undertake and record risk assessments for biological agents work (including with materials which may contain them)
  • Understand the basic principles of biosafety and biocontainment
