Discovering Teaching: Foundations in Assessment

This is an optional unit in the Discovering Teaching Pathway 

Pre-Requisite 

It is recommended to complete the online course “How Students Learn" (available mid Sept 24) before taking this course. 

Overview 

You will understand and apply foundational assessment principles whilst exploring how to apply marking criteria and rubrics tailored to higher education standards. Additionally, the course highlights the crucial link between assessment practices and the quality assurance process within higher education institutions. Join us to build a solid foundation in assessment and enhance your teaching effectiveness. 

It is recommended that this course is taken in conjunction with Discovering Feedback in Higher Education  

Please notethat this is an interactive session, and active participation is expected throughout all activities, including breakout rooms. To get the most out of the session, we recommend joining from an environment where you can fully engage. 

AttendanceParticipants are required to attend a minimum of 90% of any synchronous online training course in order to be marked as "Attended." Attendance is tracked through the attendance record generated by Microsoft Teams, which monitors login times and the duration of attendance in the session. Learning Outcomes  

At the end of this session you will be able to:  

  • Identify a variety of assessment types to use in a range of instructional settings 
  • Describe and apply marking criteria and rubrics that are relevant to HE 
  • Describe how assessment links to the quality process within HE

 

Who should attend?  

Staff and PGR’s who are at the beginning of your teaching journey. You may be a:  

  • Newly appointed Post Graduate Teaching Assistant (PGTA’s) 
  • Demonstrator 
  • Technician 
  • Anyone who has aspects of delivery or support of teaching and learning in their role and is new to teaching. E.g. roles such as: librarians, careers advisors, education and student engagement, residential experience, support and wellbeing, and counselling.
  • Post Graduate Research student (PGR’s)
