Researchers have interests. You are probably researching your project because you find the topic interesting; you may also have personal reasons for pursuing your research. If you are still a student, you are probably interested in completing your degree and getting a job. Financial security and success could also be on your list of interests.
There is nothing inherently wrong with interests: researchers are encouraged to find their work stimulating and be successful – professionally, personally and financially. However, interests can become problematic if they lead, or could be perceived to lead, to bias. Although the term 'conflicts of interest' is often used in a negative sense, conflicts only really cause a problem if they are unidentified and not taken into account as you design, conduct and report your research.
