Virtual CV writing bootcamp for Research-only Staff
Duration 1 day
Team Researcher Academy

This online CV Writing Bootcamp is run by the Researcher Academy and the Careers and Employability Service

The Researcher Academy courses are very popular and the majority are run in both semesters to give you the opportunity to attend at a time of the year that suits you.

Target Audience: Research Assistants/Associates, ‘Postdocs’, Research Fellows, Fellows, Senior Research Fellows and Principal Research Fellows.

This Bootcamp is for staff only and therefore this retreat is NOT open to postgraduate research students.

Description:

Do you need to update your CV, but never seem to find the time to dedicate? This 1 day writing retreat is offered as a professional development opportunity for research only staff. The programme will provide the opportunity to dedicate the time to writing and updating your CV, but also to hear from Careers Consultants on how to prepare a CV and how best to present your skills to future employees and funders.

This session should be considered as professional development for your workload planning.

The Programme:

10-11am: Session orientation, plenary talk (title tbc) focusing on CVs and presenting your skill set succinctly and tailoring to the sector (plenary, required)

11.00-13.00: Writing block 1*

13.00- 13.30: lunch break

13.30-14.00: 'Round table' focused discussion and Q&A on the topic of 'Converting your academic CV to an industry/business context' (optional)

*writing block timings are a guide

Throughout the afternoon, we hope to offer short appointments with a Careers Consultant to receive feedback/advice on your CV. Please note that longer appointments are available throughout the year by contacting the Careers and Employability Service. You may also wish to schedule short meetings with your mentor/line manager during the day to discuss your CV (but not your research!).

The Process:

This one-day online boot camp will be held over Teams, participants can chose whether to keep their webcams on throughout the day, but as a minimum should have the chat box open to receive updates. There will be the option to join a breakout space to follow pre-determined timed writing sessions to assist productivity/provide structure. Resources will be available once you have joined the Teams group.

Your Commitment:

Ideally, by registering for the retreat you are committing to attend for the full day. However, if there is a small portion (<10%) of this time where you would be unavailable but still wish to attend please email the retreat organiser, Victoria Sedman, before booking your place to discuss.

Participants should have all their own resources for writing. You will ideally have a good internet connection and should recognise that this boot camp will require you to be online for the duration of the day.
