The Laser Safety course provides an introduction to working safely with lasers at the university and is particularly for those who use Class 3B and Class 4 lasers. The course will outline the university’s policy and arrangements for laser safety as well as introduce the learner to laser classification, typical hazards, and the hierarchy of appropriate control measures. Please note: This is an introduction to the safe use of lasers and must be supplemented by locally provided task-specific training for the actual laser systems in use.
Learning Outcomes:
To understand what a laser is and how laser products are classified
To understand the key features of laser-controlled areas and safe working practices
To understand the risk assessment process through hazard identification and consideration of control measures
To have an overview of how laser safety calculations are carried out for selection of laser safety eyewear
To understand the university’s management arrangements regarding laser safety, including the laser safety roles in place to support users and supervisors
Intended learners: All laser users (staff and students), specifically of Class 3B and 4 lasers and also for those supervising/ managing laser work and research.
Knowledge Check: There is an 80% pass mark for this course.
