Introduction to Public Engagement 

Who should attend 

Academics and research staff with little or no experience of public engagement, who are interested in finding out about different methods of engaging the public with research, and APM staff whose roles include supporting academics on impact work. 

 

Learning Outcomes 

This 2 hour session will introduce those who are new to public engagement with research to the benefits of getting involved. It will explore the many different ways in which the public can be engaged with research and help participants to identify the appropriate audiences and processes. 

 

Participants will: 

 

  • Explore the benefits of public engagement can have for yourself, your research, research funders and the public with whom you engage.
  • Discover the types of activities you can use to engage the public with your research.
  • Investigate the needs of different public groups, explore potential engagement barriers, and identify solutions for overcoming them.

 

 

Process 

Presentation, group discussion and interactive exercises.
