Target Audience

Mid stage Postgraduate Researchers / researchers new to publishing or publishing in a new area

Course description and learning outcomes:

Overview:

Ensuring you find the appropriate publication for your academic research allows it to be shared with your research community, reaching the appropriate audience and potentially leading to collaborations and boosting citations.

This course introduces tools which can help inform decisions about publishing. We will consider some key factors to remember when looking for a venue for publication, such as audience, discoverability and publication metrics. It will be particularly useful for those new to publishing, or looking to publish in a new area. It is intended to supplement, rather than replace, detailed disciplinary advice available from research supervisors, research groups and other academic staff.

Course Description:

This course will enable researchers new to publication to evaluate, compare and make the most out of publications in journals and conferences for academic research.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of fit of a publication venue for your aims, and the implication that there is no one right place to publish
  • Be aware of the publishing and funder landscape and how that might affect your choices
  • Identify and use practical tools to inform your decisions
  • Recognise the importance of discoverability, and the mechanisms for enhancing this
  • Understand responsible metrics and how they can affect your choices and conversations around publishing
