Target Audience: Postgraduate Research Students in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences
Compulsory for School of Medicine students taking the Translation Research Training Programme (N-Trans)
Description:
This course aims to give an overview of preparing and applying for your first grant or fellowship. It involves some pre-course work through the preparation of a short fellowship proposal which is submitted via Moodle prior to the face-to-face course running. On the day of the course you will work in small groups to score the submitted proposals using a provided scoring system to gain experience of what grant panels are looking for in an application. The course tutors will collate the scores and the authors of the top 2-4 proposals will be asked to prepare a 2 minute “elevator pitch” to the group. In addition, alongside this group work, the course tutors will deliver a lecture and invited discussion from the attendees to cover the process of writing a strong grant/fellowship application, including giving an overview of how to prepare costings, writing environment statements and tips on how to “sell” yourself and your research
Process: Lecture style with interactive group discussions and small group work
