Target Audience

This course is part of the M&HS Faculty Training Programme and N-trans training programme, which are convened by Researcher Academy.

Postgraduate Research Students and Research Staff in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences only. Researchers who are based in other faculties, and who are undertaking health and medical-related research may access the online lecture capture resources. If you wish to join the practical web-based session, please email ra-training@nottingham.ac.uk to request a place, as soon as possible and no later than 5 working days before the course date.

Pre requisite

This course covers advanced level statistical methods and advanced level usage of statistical software. There will be no opportunity to cover the basics of statistics or SPSS during this workshop. If you are not familiar with SPSS you must attend the Introduction to Statistics with SPSS (online or classroom) or completed the Introduction to SPSS (online) course in advance of booking/attending. 

Participants who have not attended these introductory courses nor have prior working knowledge of the software should not book on this course as until they have covered the basic functions. There is no time during the session to cover introductory questions. 

This session has a pre-task: watch the tutor pre-recorded lectures, available on Moodle. Allow 75 minutes for completion.

Process

Blended delivery with both synchronous and asynchronous delivery. The self-study (75 minutes) must be completed in advanced of joining the live synchronous webinar. 

Participants will need their own laptop/PC with SPSS software downloaded and an internet connection. The course will be delivered via Moodle and Microsoft Teams. The live synchronous delivery will require participants to complete a series of exercises using SPSS. 

Equipment
SPSS downloaded onto your laptop/PC. Speakers and ideally microphone during the live synchronous session. Participants will need to be able to access SPSS and also Teams at the same time during the session.

Course Description

Survival analysis is used when our data is about the time taken for some event to occur, for example the time from surgery until death. This course covers the descriptive analysis of such data as well as the regression methods used to adjust for confounders.

This course will use SPSS software and include pre-recorded lectures and a live practical with tutor facilitation.  You should watch the pre-recorded lectures in advance of the practical session.

Learning outcomes

• Understand the nature of survival data
• Know how to use SPSS to do basic descriptive analysis and graphical presentations of survival data
• Know how to carry out basic tests for comparisons of survival data
• Understand how to build and interpret the output from a Cox regression model

Planning to use both SPSS and Stata?

There are two versions of this online course, each will use a different statistical package for Survival Analysis. The opening lectures for the courses are streamed according to the software you will use. The practicals will take place on different dates and focus on the use of a particular software package. 

If you are interested to learn both approaches then you may sign up for both sessions, but you will only be able to receive 1 training point.
