If you are interested in understanding what coaching is and starting to develop coaching skills then this is the course for you. Using a coaching approach to your conversations is a great way of helping other people unlock the answers for themselves.  

This course will enable you to find out what coaching is and the benefits of using a coaching approach within your conversations. You will explore the key skills needed to hold a coaching conversation, when it can be used and the benefits of taking a coaching approach. You will be introduced to a coaching model to allow you to hold great conversations. 

This is an introductory session and once you've undertaken this course the recommended progression would be to attend “Listening Skills”, “Coaching Yourself” or “Coaching Skills for Line Managers”.  

This workshop relates to the: “Communication”, “Innovation and Problem solving”, “Leading Others: Drives Performance” competencies outlined in the Competency Framework.  

Learning outcomes:  

  • Understand what coaching is  
  • Explore the differences between coaching and mentoring  
  • Identify the key skills needed to have a coaching conversation  
  • Explore when you may be able to use coaching skills in your conversations  
  • Identify how you can further develop your coaching skills 

Please be aware that this workshop is a discussion-based session with breakout group exercises. You do not have to share anything you are not comfortable with but bear in mind you will be asked to reflect on your own experiences.
