Introduction to Employee Relations

This session is for line managers; it will allow you to understand what we mean by Employee Relations and your role as a line manager in creating and maintaining positive employee relations.  

The session is delivered by the Employee Relations team and will introduce you to 

Key HR policies and how you can support your staff in a range of areas, including conduct concerns, and complaints that arise in line with the Dignity and Grievance policy. You will also explore how to have open conversations with your staff, to help manage complaints informally. 

This workshop relates to the: “Leading others: Drives Performance” and “Leading Others: Promotes wellbeing and inclusion” competencies outlined in the Competency Framework.  

Learning outcomes:  

  • Understand what we mean by employee relations
  • Have explored your role as line manager in creating and maintaining positive employee relations
  • Understand what support and resources are available to help you in managing positive employee relations
  • Raise your awareness of the key policies
  • Have worked through scenarios to help your understanding of what to do in different situations, and how to hold a pro-active and positive conversations

Please be aware that this workshop is a discussion-based session with pair and group exercises. You do not have to share anything you are not comfortable with but bear in mind you will be asked to reflect on your own experiences.  

Pre Work: 

Please familiarise yourself with the following University policies: Grievance; Dignity; and whichever Disciplinary policy applies to your staff group: Disciplinary policy for all staff except Operations & Facilities, or Disciplinary policy for Operations & Facilities. This will help you to engage with the interactive activities in the session.
