Moving from Expert to Leader
Duration 3.5 Hours
Team Professional Development

This course is for staff who have recently moved into or will soon move into a leadership role at level 5 or above.

The session will equip you for this transition, including considering benefits and challenges of your new role and new behaviours you may need to adopt. It will be an opportunity to work with others at a similar stage to discuss shared experiences and plan your future actions to make the most of your new role.

This workshop relates to the “Self-leadership”, “Leading others: sets the direction”, “Leading others: Drives performance” and “Leading others: Promotes wellbeing and inclusion” competencies outlined in the Competency Framework.

By the end of the session participants will:

  • Understand their default interpersonal needs and the benefits / challenges of this in their role as a broader leader across UoN using the FIRO framework
  • Have reviewed their transition from expert to leader and the motivators and demotivators that involves, and hence its possible impact on their behaviour
  • Understand different ‘levels’ of leadership and their links to the University’s competencies and identify the level they should/ will be working at and actions they can take to make any transition needed

Please be aware that this workshop is a discussion-based session with pair and group exercises. You do not have to share anything you are not comfortable with but bear in mind you will be asked to reflect on your own experiences.

Pre-work: before the session, please review the Competency Framework, with particular reference to the three “Leading others” competencies.
