Research Supervisor Seminar Series - Constructive guidance for your PGRs
Duration 1 hour
Team Researcher Academy

This online course is run by the Researcher Academy and forms part of the Research Supervisor Seminar Series

The Researcher Academy courses are very popular and the majority are run in both semesters to give you the opportunity to attend at a time of the year that suits you.

Target Audience: University staff involved in research supervision (either formally or informally)

Course Description:

Supervising and supporting students in their work can be challenge, just like it can be a challenge for a student to interact with their supervisor, decode their feedback and suggestions and deal with difficulties arising in their research. This session draws upon pedagogical research and many years of experience in providing 1:1 support to students, through the Centre for English Language Education (CELE). This session will address a number of issues that can help supervisors facilitate positive PGR learning experiences.

It will guide participants through student learning styles and include potential issues arising from different degrees of supervisor involvement, which could, in extreme cases, be perceived as appropriating or being dismissive of a student’s work. We will further consider the socio-affective aspect of interaction and feedback and how it can impact on motivation and performance, including different feedback styles from the angles of clarity, specificity, consistency, constructiveness, dialogue and feed-forward into meaningful long-term improvement for the student.

Speakers: Klaus Mundt and Shasha Li

Process: Webinar - Panel presentations and discussion
