This face-to-face course is run by the Researcher Academy

Target audience: This course is designed for researchers preparing to conduct focus groups as part of a qualitative or mixed-methods research project. It is open to researchers at any career stage who would like to gain confidence in using this method. 

Description:

This course forms part of the Researcher Academy Developing and defending robust qualitative research programme. It is follows day one of the programme Which qualitative approach? which we suggest you attend first. As part of this programme you can also attend an in-depth practical workshop on Practising research interview skills. 

Aim: To enable participants to be able to conduct a focus group with confidence

Objectives:

• To introduce participants to preparing themselves to conduct a focus group
• To introduce participants to formulating focus group questions and facilitating discussion
• To think about how participants at a focus group might feel being part of a focus group
• To practice running and taking part in a focus group
• To observe to provide and receive supportive feedback on focus group facilitation skills

This workshop will support students to discuss together and in small groups things to consider before conducting an interview; model an interview; provide participants with opportunities to practise interviewing with each other, observing and feeding back on the experience; think in small groups about how to use qualitative focus group data.
