Research Seminar Series: Learning from Cabin Fever - Optimising Work Environments for PGRs (online)
Duration 1 hour 30 minutes
Team Researcher Academy

This online course is run by the Researcher Academy and forms part of the Research Supervisor Seminar Series

The Researcher Academy courses are very popular and the majority are run in both semesters to give you the opportunity to attend at a time of the year that suits you.

Target Audience: University staff involved in research supervision (either formally or informally)

Course Description:

Professor Paul Crawford will discuss and debate the thorny matter of working from home, how Covid-19 introduced and provided a stress test to this practice, how staff and students faced conditions akin to a sanctuary or prison in the pandemic, and experienced both joys and pains in digital life.

He draws on his research into the impact of cabin fever and counters to the siren call for universities to get behind home working. As he argues, Covid-19 has yielded new insights into the opportunities and stark dangers of working from home, not least drawing on historical evidence and research in penal, remote living and aerospace studies.

Following the greatest confinement of people to their homes in history, we should take time to determine the best approach to creating optimal research environments for our students, not least PhD students who can endure quite solitary working for long periods.

Speakers: Paul Crawford

Process: Webinar - Panel presentations and discussion
