RSSS: Supporting PGRs into Academic Careers
Duration 1 hour 30 minutes
Team Researcher Academy

This online course is run by the Researcher Academy and forms part of the Research Supervisor Seminar Series

The Researcher Academy courses are very popular and the majority are run in both semesters to give you the opportunity to attend at a time of the year that suits you.

Target Audience: University staff involved in research supervision (either formally or informally)

Course Description:

PGRs often turn to their supervisory team to initiate constructive career conversations. This advice is important in helping PGRs to identify their strengths (developed through their research) and encouraging them to look for opportunities to enhance these skills is vital.

In this session, Kirstin Barnard will highlight the opportunities available to PGRs through interaction with the careers and employability service and will provide useful strategies to help you support your PGRs in order to have open conversations about pursuing an academic career. Dr Lauren Bradford will then translate her experience of transitioning from a PhD into academia, talk about what support she received, and highlight what advice she has learnt to pass onto her future PGRs.

Dr Christopher Madan will also discuss how an academic role differs from a PhD, drawing from his own experiences as well as those he has gathered from interviewing others about their reflections and advice to PGRs. This session concludes by bringing together a panel of experts, from across disciplines who support PGRs, to answer your questions on how best to support PGRs into academic careers.

Speakers: Kirstin Barnard, Lucie Whitfield, Dr Lauren Bradford, Dr Christopher Madan, Dr Peter Noy and Dr Jen Yates

Process: Webinar - Panel presentations and discussion
