Course Description: 

Dr Nicolas Gold, Associate Professor, University College London 

The social media data landscape is complex, dynamic, and always evolving. This means that it poses particular challenges to researchers wanting to undertake ethically defensible research with social media and similar online data.  In this talk Dr Gold will discuss these complexities, drawing out some key aspects that need to be addressed when considering the ethics of an intended research investigation.  Dr Gold will share some principles and approaches for building ethical arguments in this space, drawing on foundational principles and recent research. He will also briefly highlight some key terms and conditions of specific platforms that may influence how researchers approach their investigations. 

The session will explore: 

- some of the key ethics issues that arise when using social media data. 

- constructing arguments for ethically defensible research in this space. 

- a brief look at some key terms that may be imposed by major platforms, and their potential impact on research methods and ethical argument. 

Biography:

Nicolas Gold is Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at University College London. His research spans source code analysis, design, computing education with music and making, and research ethics. He is currently co-chair of the Computer Science Research Ethics Committee. Prior to joining UCL in 2010, he was a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer at King’s College London and before that at UMIST/University of Manchester, following the award of his PhD at Durham University in 2000.
