The session will explore approaches to embedding ethics in research projects and mobilising research integrity principles in research planning. This session will provide examples of tools, approaches and networks that can support best practice approaches in research.
Professor Kate Millar, Director, Centre for Applied Bioethics, School of Biosciences and School of Veterinary Medicine and Science.
Expertise: Applied ethics; Ethics of the biosciences and biotechnology assessment, Stakeholder and publics engagement; Development of Ethical Frameworks; Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) approaches.
Kate’s research focusses on animal and agri-food ethics, the development of ethical frameworks (e.g. the Ethical Matrix), publics / stakeholder engagement and biosciences research ethics training approaches. Kate has extensive international and UK research experience with current work funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), EC H2020, The Wellcome Trust, BBSRC, FRAME, EPSRC. Kate is President of the European Society for Agricultural and Food Ethics (EurSafe) and founding member of ‘AsiaSafe’ (a network linking researchers working on agriculture and animal ethics across Asia). She is on the Editorial Board of Food Ethics (Springer) and previously the Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics. She serves on a number of UK and international ethics advisory boards and was recently appointed as a visiting academic at Centre of Bioethics in Southern and Eastern Africa-(CEBESA), College of Medicine, University of Malawi.
