Research Seminar Series: Lessons from a supervisor from inside the machine. Advice for PSAs and PGR Directors
Duration 0.5 days
Team Researcher Academy

This face to face course is run by the Researcher Academy and forms part of the Research Supervisor Seminar Series

The Researcher Academy courses are very popular and the majority are run in both semesters to give you the opportunity to attend at a time of the year that suits you.

Target Audience: University staff involved in research supervision (either formally or informally)

Course Abstract:

Over the past twenty years the UK Government has increased the number of postgraduate students studying to PhD level. Various research councils have underpinned this commitment by broadening the range of opportunities open to potential students and backing this up with funding for 4 years of study.

In conjunction with increasing pressure on academics to publish, the tendency has been for students to spend more time in the lab, work to the limit of the available funding and reduce the time for appropriate reflection. I will share with you what I have seen as an academic and, more recently, as a Lead for Postgraduate Activities in the School of Life Sciences. I am keen to learn your thoughts on how to respond to PGR students who present with stress-related issues or difficulties with their supervisor.

Speakers: Vince Wilson and Jennie Phillips

Process: Webinar - Panel presentations and discussion
