Research Supervisor Seminar Series: Making a Success of Remote Supervision
Duration 1 hour 30 minutes
Team Researcher Academy

This online course is run by the Researcher Academy and forms part of the Research Supervisor Seminar Series

The Researcher Academy courses are very popular and the majority are run in both semesters to give you the opportunity to attend at a time of the year that suits you.

Target Audience: University staff involved in research supervision (either formally or informally)

Course Description:

This session is for all supervisors of doctoral students. Remote supervision presents challenges of forging relationships, managing records, establishing expectations and giving feedback to our Doctoral candidates. But it offers us huge advantages in mediating dialogues, setting up systems for co-working, and engaging students with the wider research culture. This session will present positive strategies to:
  • Manage Teams (or another platform) to maximise its continuity, record keeping capabilities and access
  • Build up the early relationship and expectations with doctoral students which might formerly have been done face to face
  • Handle feedback on written work
  • Manage constructive, challenging discussions and keep records of these
  • Induct students into wider communities of research and writing- in the school, university and research environment
The session will also identify some areas where interactions need to be different from those usually conducted. I will discuss strategies to replace the “casual contact” we might miss with our students.

Speaker: Jane Medwell

Process: Webinar - Panel presentations and discussion
