Research Supervisor Seminar Series: Supporting PGR Wellbeing - Results from a Study of Doctoral Student Mental Health
Duration 1 hour 30 minutes
Team Researcher Academy

This online course is run by the Researcher Academy and forms part of the Research Supervisor Seminar Series

The Researcher Academy courses are very popular and the majority are run in both semesters to give you the opportunity to attend at a time of the year that suits you.

Target Audience: University staff involved in research supervision (either formally or informally)

Course Description:

Dr Katy Jones and Dr Bethan Davies (from UoN’s Institute of Mental Health) will present findings from a recent survey about sleep quality and mental health of PhD students. Getting good quality sleep is really important for our wellbeing. PhD students face particular challenges in that they can make their own hours and are often juggling other commitments, such as work and family.

However we still know less about PhD student mental health and sleep quality compared to undergraduate students. Two-hundred PhD students across all faculties at the University of Nottingham* completed an online survey, where they answered questions about their academic circumstances (e.g., funding source, employment alongside PhD, home or international student, work in a group or alone, relationship with their supervisor) and complete questionnaires about their sleep quality and mental health (depression, anxiety and stress). Students could also tell us more about how their PhD affects their sleep.

We will discuss how the findings of this study can be applied in practice and ideas for future research. This webinar is suitable for any supervisor at any level.

*Note these data were collected in September-December 2019 before the COVID-19 outbreak.

Speakers: Katy Jones and Bethan Davies

Process: Webinar - Panel presentations and discussion
