In person session, University Park, venue to be confirmed
Lunch will be provided (12:00-12:30)
For doctoral supervisors at all stages of their supervisory journey, this interactive session offers an opportunity to develop the insights, confidence, and practical skills needed to navigate complex supervisory situations and make informed decisions. Using case studies drawn from doctoral supervision and informed by UoN regulations, participants will explore challenging scenarios, consider different approaches, and identify effective ways forward, drawing on the expertise of a panel of academic, Student Registry and Researcher Academy colleagues who will offer guidance, share perspectives, and support reflection on possible courses of action.
The session is designed to deepen understanding of the institutional structures, regulations and support mechanisms that underpin doctoral supervision. Through discussion and reflection, supervisors will strengthen their ability to respond to difficult situations, exercise sound judgement, and access appropriate sources of guidance and support.
Who is it for? All colleagues engaged in formal and informal doctoral supervision. In addition to members of formal supervisory teams, assistant, co- and informal supervisors, including postdoctoral and research staff, research technical professionals and professional services.
This session is part of the RSVP project, which aims to transform the culture and practice of research supervision across the UK. RSVP is a £4.6M Research England project, involving over 50 research organisations from the UK and beyond. The project has the backing of most major UK research funders and was extensively referenced in UKRI's recent New deal for postgraduate research. By participating in this session and providing feedback, your views can influence our national programme of supervisor development.
