Target Audience
Early career researchers, especially those at the beginning of their careers (i.e. postgraduate research students) and members of staff.

About this session
This is an introduction to literature searching, critical evaluation, and managing your references, run by the Libraries Learning Development Team (Information Skills). This session will allow Postgraduate Researchers and members of staff to develop their literature searching skills and become more effective researchers. 

Learning outcomes:
By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • source UoN resources and specialist information within a discipline to employ a thorough literature search
  • construct effective search strategies using appropriate terminology and database functionality to facilitate retrieval of relevant literature
  • use alerting services to keep up to date with research in a specific discipline
  • employ critical skills to evaluate the authority, reliability and validity of published literature
  • determine relevant services which enable access to resources beyond the University to extend research

This is a two hour course. We offer this session both in person, and online, and this session runs in the autumn and spring semester.
