Target audience

Postgraduate research students and research staff undertaking a systematic or scoping review.

Pre-requisites

Some experience of searching subject databases, such as Medline or Embase.

Course description

This session will provide an introduction to searching the grey literature and citation searching, and give an overview of some of the tools that can be used to manage the systematic review (SR) process. It will cover the different types of grey literature, how to approach searching these resources and explain how generative AI is starting to be used in some parts of the SR process. Please note: It will not cover the basics of literature searching and searching Medline.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you should:

  • understand the different types of grey literature resources and how to search them
  • understand the importance of forwards and backwards citation searching
  • be aware of the use of generative AI in evidence synthesis
  • be familiar with the different tools that can help with managing the SR process

Process

This is a one-hour online course delivered via Microsoft Teams and consists of a presentation with some interaction. Please note that the presentation section will be recorded.
