Discovering Teaching: How Students Learn (Online Course)

This is a mandatory unit in the Discovering Teaching Pathway.

This course is a self-paced online module that you can fit into your schedule whenever is convenient for you.

Overview:

This course introduces the key learning theories which provides understanding of how students absorb, process, and retain knowledge enabling you to adapt teaching methods to meet diverse learning needs and enhance the overall student experience.

Please note: that this is an interactive session, and active participation is expected throughout all activities, including breakout rooms. To get the most out of the session, we recommend joining from an environment where you can fully engage. 

AttendanceParticipants are required to attend a minimum of 90% of any synchronous online training course in order to be marked as "Attended." Attendance is tracked through the attendance record generated by Microsoft Teams, which monitors login times and the duration of attendance in the session. Learning Outcomes:
By completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Recognise the core learning processes of major theories, including behaviourism, constructivism, cognitivism, social constructivism, connectivism and experiential learning theory.
  • Identify the roles of both educators and students within each theory.
  • Apply theoretical principles to create effective classroom strategies.

Who should attend?

Staff and PGR’s who are at the beginning of your teaching journey. You may be a:

  • Newly appointed PGTA
  • PGR
  • Demonstrators who are involved with assessment
  • Technician
  • Anyone who has aspects of delivery or support of teaching and learning in their role and is new to teaching. E.g. roles such as: librarians, careers advisors, education and student engagement, residential experience, support and wellbeing, counselling, and staff involved with training and development.
