This face to face course is run by the Researcher Academy
The Researcher Academy courses are very popular and the majority are run in both semesters to give you the opportunity to attend at a time of the year that suits you. Semester 1 courses will be available for booking from the second week of October and Semester 2 courses from the second week of February.
Target Audience: Mid stage postgraduate research students and early career researchers.
Do you have some experience of presenting but wonder whether you really convey your message with the impact and emphasis you would like? Would you appreciate honest and constructive feedback on your style and delivery in a supportive environment? If the answer to these questions is “yes” then this course is for you.
The influence of an effective presentation can never be underestimated and the development and refinement of this key communication skill is invaluable for researchers at all stages of their academic careers. The ability to deliver a quality presentation enables researchers to effectively disseminate their work, create impact and raise their academic profile. This course is design for individuals who have some experience of delivering presentations and feel reasonably confident standing up in front of an audience but would like to further develop their skills.
Process: This is a half-day participative small group workshop.
The course provides a valuable opportunity to meet and learn from a small group of academic peers from a range of disciplines. The course is highly interactive, focussed on the delivery and evaluation of presentations from the course participants. Each course member is invited to deliver and receive feedback on their own presentation as well as contributing to feedback on the presentations of others. In addition, you will have the opportunity to watch and review your own presentation on video and will receive individual feedback from the course tutor. Your presentation will be videoed which offers an excellent opportunity to reflect on your own performance after the course.
This course aims to further develop your skills of spoken communication, with particular reference to an academic context enabling you to deliver more effective and engaging presentations.
By the end of the course you will:
• understand what contributes to making a quality, memorable presentation and be able to apply this to your own talks • be able to apply feedback from peers to develop the content and delivery of your presentations. • be able to evaluate and subsequently develop your own performance

Your completion of the booking process shall constitute your consent to the collection, use and disclosure of your personal data to University staff and external partners responsible for the delivery of the course or event for which you have registered. Personal information shared includes; name, role/position, mode of study, School/Department, dietary and accessibility requirements.
Researchers should plan to arrive prior to the advertised course start time. Except for exceptional reasons, there will be no admittance to a researcher academy or Faculty Training Programme (FTP) course 15 minutes after the advertised course start time.
Importance of booking commitment
When booking on to a Researcher Academy short course you are entering into a commitment to attend. If you find that you are no longer available to attend you MUST cancel your place (on the system if more than three days before the course) or if at short notice by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. This will ensure that your place can be offered to another researcher on the waiting list. Failure to cancel a place results in other researchers missing out on places through the waiting list process.
It is unacceptable for researchers to just not attend when booked onto a course. The Researcher Academy maintains records of those who repeatedly do not attend courses they have booked. This may affect future eligibility to book onto further Researcher Academy courses and will affect considerations for Researcher Academy funded opportunities.
Please come prepared to give a 10 minute presentation to a small group of researchers from a variety of different disciplines.
Please note that this activity forms an essential element of the course and must be completed for you to fully participate in the session. Anyone who has not completed this task will not be able to take part in the course.
PowerPoint, a white board and flipchart will be provided for your use. Please feel free to bring your own laptop if you wish.
If you want to use PowerPoint to deliver your presentation you should arrive at the course 10 minutes early in order to have time to set up. Please bring your presentations on a USB storage stick.
