Gas Cylinders - Safe Handling and Use

Who should undertake this training:

This course is mandatory for any staff or PGRs who are required to use, handle, and store gas cylinders as part of their work.

The course provides the basics of safe use and handling of gas cylinders. It is for schools and departments to supplement the training with any task-specific training as identified through risk assessment.

Duration: Approx. 2hrs 50mins

(Course be completed over a period of time, it does not need to be done in one go)

Course content:

  • Information on gas cylinders and valves
  • Using gas cylinders safely
  • Gas regulators details
  • Safe handling of gas cylinders
  • Safe storage of gas cylinders
  • Correct set-up of a gas cylinder system
  • Information on oxidants, inert gases and fuel gases

At the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Correctly identify gas cylinders
  • Understand how cylinders operate
  • Be aware of the hazards of asphyxia
  • Recognise the hazards posed by oxygen enrichment
  • Identify flammability hazards
  • Select the correct gas control equipment
  • Identify the key stages in using cylinders safely
  • Recognise the hazards associated with handling cylinders
  • Re-assess current storage facilities in line with safe working practices
  • Become proactive in assessing risk when using gas cylinders
  • Introduce safe working practices into their working environment

Refresher period: advised 3-yearly repeat of eLearning course

Cost:   £32.00 + vat (paid by the learner’s school/department)
