This course is mandatory for any staff or PGRs who are required to use, handle, and store cryogenic liquids as part of their work.

The course provides the basics of safe use and handling of cryogens. It is for schools and departments to supplement the training with any task-specific training as identified through risk assessment.

Delivery: eLearning

Duration: Approx. 1hr 45mins

(Course can be completed over a period of time, it does not need to be done in one go)

Course content:

  • Properties of liquid nitrogen
  • Treatment of cold burns
  • Essential personal protective equipment
  • Expansion rate of liquid to gas
  • The hazards of asphyxia
  • Hazards posed by pressure
  • How to calculate oxygen depletion
  • Cryogenic vessel design and operation
  • Safe storage of cryogenic vessels
  • Safe handling of cryogenic vessels
  • Safe decanting of liquid nitrogen

Although the course is named “Using Liquid Nitrogen Safely within Universities,” the course content is relevant to all cryogenic liquids.

At the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Appreciate the properties of cryogenic liquids
  • Describe how humans react in oxygen deficient situations
  • Recognise the potential hazards posed by an uncontrolled release of pressure
  • Identify different types of personal protective equipment and the need to comply with work procedures
  • Distinguish the difference and similarities between pressure vessels and dewars
  • Describe how a pressurised cryogenic vessel operates
  • Identify key safety procedures when decanting liquid nitrogen
  • Appreciate the consequences of using incorrect procedures and faulty equipment
  • Recognise the dangers of transporting cryogenic vessels in lifts
