Are you comfortable with managing, organising and storing your research data safely? Are you confident handling the ethical aspects of collecting, managing and sharing sensitive data? Do you know how to deposit your data with the UK Data Service?
We welcome the UK Data Service to convene this short workshop, which will address these questions and improve your knowledge and skills on the management and archiving of social science research data questions in an interactive, hands-on setting.
The workshop is designed in particular for ESRC grant holders, researchers and research managers at ERSC research centres, who are expected to archive their data with the UK Data Service for future reuse. Also other researchers interested in archiving data to make them available for reuse or as evidence for a published paper will benefit from this workshop.
Topics covered include:
Documenting and describing research data effectively: the importance of documenting and describing research data are explored alongside how to best achieve this in practice
Data storage, backup, transfer, collaboration and encryption: how to securely and safely store, backup, transfer and encrypt research data
Ethical and legal aspects of managing and sharing qualitative and quantitative sensitive data: consent procedures, anonymisation, access regulation
Preparing and archiving research data: the process of data deposit will be demonstrated, including:
File formats we recommend
Which supporting documentation to provide for a data collection
Why detailed and accurate metadata is important
The most suitable access level and licence for your data
How we review your data before publication
