Session Description:

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT® http://www.threeminutethesis.org) is a research communication competition originally developed by The University of Queensland in Australia.

The aim of the competition is to help research students develop their academic, presentation, and research communication skills and support them to effectively explain their research in three minutes in a language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience.

We encourage PhD students from all disciplines to attend this one hour session and enter the competition. Session attendees are however not obliged to enter the 3MT® competition.

This preparatory training session will aim to do the following:

  • Provide information about the competition, its timescales and requirements
  • Provide tips about putting together your three minute presentation
  • Provide general presentation skills information and support
  • Provide you with the opportunity to reflect upon your own research project and how you might deliver a three minute summary for the competition.
  • You will hear from Afrakoma Afriyie-Asante, the University's 2017 3MT® competition winner and also see her winning 3MT® presentation.

Additional information about the competition

The Graduate School will provide additional support and presentation training tailored specifically to this competition to help the competition entrants prepare for a live 3MT®  presentation at Link'18, the student-led interdisciplinary research conference.

The Graduate School will also produce a professional video of the winning presentation that will be used as an entry for further competitions, including the National Vitae 3MT® competition and the University's Tri-Campus 3MT ® Competition.  The video will be recorded at the University's Video Hub on Thursday 14th June 2018.
