Further LaTeX for researchers: developing your skills in LaTeX
Duration 0.5 days
Team Researcher Academy

This face to face course is run by the Researcher Academy

Researcher Academy courses are very popular and the majority are run in both semesters to give you the opportunity to attend at a time of the year that suits you.

Target Audience: Mid stage postgraduate research students and early career researchers.

This course is designed for researchers who have a basic working knowledge of LaTeX and would like to develop their skills in order to more fully utilise its functions in particular using BibTeX to help manage their references in relation to a LaTeX document.

Description:

LaTeX is a package based on TeX and its purpose is to simplify TeX typesetting, especially for documents containing mathematical formulae. LaTeX is widely used as the industry standard for technical writing and guidelines for the submission of scientific papers to international conferences and journals are often provided in the form of LaTeX/BibTeX stylesheets.

During this course you will go beyond the basic functions of LaTeX to explore some of the more advanced features available. This will include the management of referencing using BibTeX, various editing functions, accessing templates and producing presentation slides. For those wishing to use LaTeX to produce a poster, we include poster templates in the course materials.

Aims: To develop your skills in using LaTeX for document preparation.

Objectives:

By the end of the session you will be able to:

·        manage citations with BibTeX

·        investigate the use of graphical interfaces (e.g. JabRef) for managing BibTeX databases

·        divide your content into separate files, for example a file per chapter

·        combine chapters into a single, final document

·        understand and use document class files, style files and bibliography style files

·        access templates e.g. for a thesis and journal paper

·        use LaTeX to make presentation slides

Process: A half-day course consisting of presentations and 'hands-on' practical sessions.

Booking Conditions

Latecomer policy

Researchers should plan to arrive prior to the advertised course start time. Except for exceptional reasons, there will be no admittance to a Researcher Academy or Faculty Training Programme (FTP) course 15 minutes after the advertised course start time.

Importance of booking commitment

When booking on to a Researcher Academy short course you are entering into a commitment to attend. If you find that you are no longer available to attend you MUST cancel your place (on the system if more than three days before the course) or if at short notice by emailing ra-training@nottingham.ac.uk. This will ensure that your place can be offered to another researcher on the waiting list. Failure to cancel a place results in other researchers missing out on places through the waiting list process.

It is unacceptable for researchers to just not attend when booked onto a course. The Researcher Academy maintains records of those who repeatedly do not attend courses they have booked. This may affect future eligibility to book onto further Researcher Academy courses and will affect considerations for Researcher Academy funded opportunities.
