Shut Up and Finish (A one-day writing retreat)(NO LONGER RUNNING)
Duration 1 day
Team Researcher Academy

This course is delivered by the Researcher Academy

Researcher Academy courses are very popular and the majority are run in both semesters to give you the opportunity to attend at a time of the year that suits you. Semester 1 courses will be available for booking from the second week of October and Semester 2 courses from the second week of February.

Target audience: Shut Up and Finish is open to all research students (MRes or PhD) and research staff who need the time, space and environment to finish a piece of academic writing.

Do you have a part of your thesis that needs to be finished or a research proposal? Or do you need some time and space to focus on a particular piece of writing?

Shut Up and Finish is a one-day writing retreat open for doctoral researchers (including MRes students) and research staff who need a quiet space and the time to focus on writing. The purpose is to provide you a low distraction environment away from your usual working space to get on with writing. It runs from 9.30 – 4.30 pm and is a structured approach to writing where your writing is done in timed intervals.

Attendees should come to the event with everything you need i.e. research resources, pen or paper or a laptop (fully charged) if you use one.

Whilst the session starts at 09:30, please arrive at 09:15 to set up your writing space.

The session starts with a brief introduction and is then broken into cycles:

- 10 minutes – Introduction and set up

- 30 minutes - Cycle 1 writing

- 5 minute break

- 30 minutes - Cycle 2 writing

- 5 minute break

- 30 minutes - Cycle 3 writing

- 5 minute break

- 30 minutes - Cycle 4 writing

- 5 minute break

- 30 minutes - Cycle 5 writing

This structure is repeated twice in the day and is broken up by a one-hour lunch. You are invited to bring your own lunch to consume on the lunch break. Breaks during the morning and afternoon will be short, so please bring water bottles/drinks and snacks to have during these times, as there will not be time to venture out to a café to purchase anything, apart from in the lunch break.

This is a one-day writing-intensive environment. Deskspace will be provided for researchers to dedicate a full day to a writing task of their choosing.

By registering for this event, you are committing to attend for the full day. No training points are associated with this session.

Booking Conditions

Latecomer policy

Researchers should plan to arrive prior to the advertised course start time. Except for exceptional reasons, there will be no admittance to a Researcher Academy or Faculty Training Programme (FTP) course 15 minutes after the advertised course start time.

Importance of booking commitment

When booking on to a Researcher Academy short course you are entering into a commitment to attend. If you find that you are no longer available to attend you MUST cancel your place (on the system if more than three days before the course) or if at short notice by emailing pg-training@nottingham.ac.uk. This will ensure that your place can be offered to another researcher on the waiting list. Failure to cancel a place results in other researchers missing out on places through the waiting list process.

It is unacceptable for researchers to just not attend when booked onto a course. Researcher Academy maintains records of those who repeatedly do not attend courses they have booked. This may affect future eligibility to book onto further Researcher Academy courses and will affect considerations for Researcher Academy funded opportunities.

Pre-Requisites
