Mental Health First Aid HE (Higher Education)

Title:Mental Health First Aid HE (Higher Education)

Duration:1 day
Central Short Courses
Higher Education MHFA One day course

The intensive Higher Education mental health awareness and skills course was created by Mental Health First Aid England in consultation with leading student mental health charity Student Minds.  It was piloted in 16 universities and evaluated by the University of Chester.

This one day course qualifies you as a Higher Education MHFA Champion.  It is designed to give you:

  • A deeper understanding of the issues that relate to student and staff mental health
  • Skills to spot early signs of mental ill health
  • Confidence to signpost someone to support - whether that's through self-help resources, university counselling services, the NHS, or a mix
  • Knowledge and confidence to advocate for mental health awareness

Please note that attendance of this course would NOT qualify you as a Mental Health First Aider.  If you wish to become a Mental Health First Aider, you need to book the 2 day course INSTEAD.  The courses overlap so it is strongly recommended that you choose this course OR the MHFAider course (2 days).

For more information about the course structure please see MHFA England's website:  https://mhfaengland.org/individuals/higher-education/1-day/

COST:

Mental Health First Aid England value this course at £200 per person.  However, the cost of the course is subsidised by the University of Nottingham and so we are able to offer this course for free to members of staff.  However, if you book a place and do not attend, we will need to pass on the cost for the training resources to your area.  Similarly if you cancel your place within one week of course starting you will be charged.  Charge will be £25.00 per person.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

We limit numbers to 16 people per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported while they learn.

The day includes a mix of presentations, group discussions and workshop activities.  You will get a Higher Education MHFA manual to keep and refer to whenever you need it.

When you complete the day you'll get a certificate to say you are a Higher Education MHFA Champion.
Please note - this training is not designed to provide therapy.  We recommend that you attend the training when you feel well supported and have a good sense of well-being.  If you do feel you would benefit from some support at the moment, you can contact the UoNottingham's Employee Assistance programme (accessible through the UoN Employee Hub).

TUTOR:

This course will be led by a University of Nottingham tutor who has trained and is accredited as an instructor with Mental Health First Aid England.
