This course is a two-week online course requiring about 9-10 hours spread over two weeks.

The date given is the first day of the course. By signing up you are acknowledging the full two weeks.

Course Description

This course aims to provide those teaching or planning to teach an online or blended course with ideas, techniques and skills to design and facilitate learning online.

In this course you’ll learn how to design engaging activities that motivate students and promote learning in completely online courses or as part of a blended course. You will practice the essential skills of online facilitation: how to initiate and keep the discussion going with a minimum of intervention.

This entirely online course will take around 7-8 hours spread (reasonably evenly) over two weeks. You will be expected to engage in online activities which develop and build practical skills.

Learning Outcomes:

  •  to understand the key concepts relating to online earning and its application at the University of Nottingham
  •  to appreciate how participants will feel on undertaking an online course, or an online element of a blended course
  • be able to provide the support online participants need
  • to use and apply models and theories of online learning
  • to design activities for participatory social online learning
  • to facilitate and develop online interactions
  • to apply online learning in a blended course
  •  to understand how learning materials can be organised within an online learning environment such as Moodle or FutureLearn

Who should attend?
Academic or support staff, or postgraduate students involved or planning to be involved in in learning and teaching in online-only or blended courses.
A separate version of the course is available for undergraduate students as part of the Nottingham Advantage Award.  Postgraduate students should already have been asked to facilitate an online course or blended course.

Course Tutor:
Helen Whitehead is a Learning Technology Consultant at the University of Nottingham. She has a special interest in online and blended learning and has been supporting and training people to effectively teach online for many years, across a number of Universities and colleges.
