Graduate School Induction for the Faculty of Social Sciences
Duration 0.5 days
Team Researcher Academy

This face to face course is run by the Researcher Academy as part of the Social Sciences Faculty Training Programme

The Researcher Academy courses are very popular and the majority are run in both semesters to give you the opportunity to attend at a time of the year that suits you.

The aim of this session is to help new and relatively new postgraduate research students understand what they might need from Researcher Academy to help them during their time as a postgraduate research student i.e. understand their training need, and how to access courses.

Whilst the sessions are aimed at groups of schools based on physical location, you may attend any of these sessions.

Dearing Building, Jubilee Campus, Monday 14th October 2019, 2-3pm: Education and Business

LASS Building, UP, Wednesday 16th October 2019, 10-11am: Sociology and Social Policy, Law, and Politics and International Relations

Sir Clive Granger Building, UP, Wednesday 23rd October, 1:00-2:00pm: Geography and Economics

The session will provide:

  • An opportunity to consider the skills and attributes that you will be expected to develop as a researcher and examine your own need as a new or relatively new research student.
  • An examination of Researcher Academy’s Researcher Development Programme of courses which can be considered in the light of the examination of your skills need. These courses are free of charge to postgraduate students at the University of Nottingham.
  •  An overview of other Researcher Academy provision and the various funding and development opportunities it coordinates.
  •  Signposting to other professional services for research students.
An opportunity to meet other new postgraduate research students and share experiences.

Booking Guidelines

Latecomer policy
Researchers should plan to arrive prior to the advertised course start time. Except for exceptional reasons, there will be no admittance to a Researcher Academy or Faculty Training Programme (FTP) course 15 minutes after the advertised course start time.

Importance of booking commitment
When booking on to a Researcher Academy short course you are entering into a commitment to attend. If you find that you are no longer available to attend you MUST cancel your place (on the system if more than three days before the course) or if at short notice by emailing pg-training@nottingham.ac.uk. This will ensure that your place can be offered to another researcher on the waiting list. Failure to cancel a place results in other researchers missing out on places through the waiting list process.

It is unacceptable for researchers to just not attend when booked onto a course. The Researcher Academy maintains records of those who repeatedly do not attend courses they have booked. This may affect future eligibility to book onto further Researcher Academy courses and will affect considerations for Researcher Academy funded opportunities.
