Project managing your research (moderated online learning course)
Duration 5 days
Team Researcher Academy

This moderated online course is run by the Researcher Academy

The Researcher Academy courses are very popular and the majority are run in both semesters to give you the opportunity to attend at a time of the year that suits you.

Target Audience: Early and mid stage postgraduate researchers (especially off-campus) and early career research staff.

This online course is aimed at postgraduate and early career researchers from any discipline who would like to learn more about the principles of project management and how they can be applied to manage their research projects more efficiently and effectively. Project management techniques are now widely used both within and outside the research environment and the ability to apply such techniques represents an increasingly relevant transferable skill. If you would prefer to attend this course in person, we also run Project managing your research (face-to-face workshop).

Description:

During this course you will be introduced to some of the common ideas and techniques in project management including how to plan a project, schedule task work, monitor progress and manage risks. During the course you will be encouraged to think about which of these skills may be useful in managing your own research project and how these principles could be applied.

Many of you will already be using some of the techniques; though you may not call them project management techniques! The intention of the course is not to overload you with information which might result in the 'over' administration of your doctoral degree or research project. Its aim is to provide techniques which you may want to incorporate into your existing working patterns in order to develop some useful and transferable techniques in managing particular sections of your research.

Aims/ Objectives:

The aim of this course is to help you understand the principles of project management and how they could be applied to your research project(s).

By the end of this course you will:

  • View your research in terms of a 'project'
  • Understand some of the key terms and techniques associated with contemporary research project management
  • Consider organisation, roles and stakeholders in your research project
  • Think through the 'why' and 'how' of planning in your research project
  • Consider 'risk' as a normal and manageable element of your research
  • Understand the concepts associated with managing research project quality
Tutor: Dr Eleanor Forward - Eleanor convenes and delivers this course and is an experienced project (and programme) manager.
