Webinar: Introduction to Social Media for Engagement

Who should
attend

Academics and research staff with little or no experience in social media who are interested in learning how to use social media to support their policy and public engagement work, and APM staff with little or no experience in social media whose roles include supporting academics on impact work.

This webinar session is primarily intended for staff based in UNNC and UNM, but UK-based staff are also welcome to join.

Learning Outcomes

This 2 hour webinar will introduce the various social media platforms that academics can use to support their policy and public engagement work. It will explore the functionality, personality and core audiences of key platforms and offer tips on how to get started in social media.

Note that the content of this session is based mainly on social media in the UK, which is very different from those in Malaysia and particularly in China. We will adapt the content as far as possible and aim to focus on general good practice to make the session useful for colleagues in UNNC and UNM.

Participants will:

  • Learn the differences between the main social media platforms and which are likely to be most suitable to their individual goals
  • Learn the potential of social media in terms of reaching a wider external audience
  • Understand how to manage the risks of using social media and where to get support
  • Learn how to build an initial profile and audience
