This course is available to both staff and postgraduate research students. It is offered in addition to the Creative Thinking Course and will cover different techniques, based on the work of Edward De Bono.
Course Description:
In 1970 De Bono published his book 'Lateral Thinking'. It was ground-breaking work at the time and it remains a classic in the field of creativity today. The thoughts outlined in the book form the basis of many techniques that have followed. This 2-hour course will look at the philosophy behind Lateral Thinking and examine many of the techniques suggested by De Bono. It will help you to substantially increase the chance of you having new ideas and approaches to problems.
Learning Outcomes:
·Understand the distinction between vertical and lateral thinking;
·How to challenge assumptions and dominant ideas;
·How to utilise the techniques of brainstorming, fractionalization, reversal, random stimulation and choice of entry point;
·How to avoid the trap of being mentally blocked by openness.
