Researcher Academy courses are very popular and the majority are run in both semesters to give you the opportunity to attend at a time of the year that suits you. Semester 1 courses will be available for booking from the second week of October and Semester 2 courses from the second week of February.

Early career research staff

This course is aimed at postgraduate and early career researchers who are, or will be, working with research data and have had little or no previous training in research data management. The management of research data is important at all stages of a project and when done effectively can protect against data loss, improve organisation, aid the validation of results and offer new research opportunities and collaborations. This course therefore provides a valuable opportunity to gain an insight into the issues, requirements and strategies involved in data management in order to aid the management of your research project data.

There are no pre-requisite tasks.

Process

This is a practical workshop with individual and group work.

Description

The course provides an overview of research data management at each stage of the research process. A range of topics relevant to the management of data will be addressed including:

· The data lifecycle

· Forms of research data

· Data ownership and responsibility

· Data storage and security

· Documenting data

· Data sharing

· Data retention and archiving

· Dealing with sensitive and personal data

· Policies on data management

The course will address challenges and issues commonly faced by researchers and help you to work towards the creation of a data management plan

Please note: data analysis methods are NOT considered in this course.

Research Integrity -stand-alone online course designed to strengthen your awareness of your own responsibilities and accountability when planning and conducting research and provides guidance on what to do should things go wrong.

Aims

To introduce you to the key issues, requirements and strategies associated with research data management and assist you with the development of a data management plan for your research project(s).

Objectives

By the end of the course you will:

· Understand how to preserve and safeguard your data

· Be aware of policy and funding requirements around data management

· Understand how to manage sensitive data

· Be able to implement strategies for the storing, naming and backup of data

· Understand ways of sharing data and licencing

· Be able to create a data management plan

Latecomer policy
Researchers should plan to arrive prior to the advertised course start time. Except for exceptional reasons, there will be no admittance to a Researcher Academy or Faculty Training Programme (FTP) course 15 minutes after the advertised course start time.

Importance of booking commitment
When booking on to a Researcher Academy short course you are entering into a commitment to attend. If you find that you are no longer available to attend you MUST cancel your place (on the system if more than three days before the course or if at short notice by emailing pg-training@nottingham.ac.uk). This will ensure that your place can be offered to another researcher on the waiting list. Failure to cancel a place results in other researchers missing out on places through the waiting list process.

It is unacceptable for researchers to just not attend when booked onto a course. Researcher Academy maintains records of those who repeatedly do not attend courses they have booked. This may affect future eligibility to book onto further Researcher Academy courses and will affect considerations for Researcher Academy funded opportunities.
