At various times, your doctoral students may be required to work with organisations external to the University of Nottingham. This could include other Universities, industry, charities, think tanks, or social movements. These organisations could be key empirical sites for your students’ projects, or they may be ‘partners’ or funders of the work. In some cases, these organisations may be long standing professional contacts of you as the supervisor; in other cases they may be new connections for you or new links made by your student.
The aim of this session is to consider some of the benefits and risks of working with external organisations. Drawing on their own varied experience of research, the session leaders will provide critical thoughts on how best to mitigate some of the potential risks or challenges of this kind of research supervision. We also hope that participants will come willing to share their own thoughts, experiences and insights.
